Colour trend... Metal finishes

Over the past couple of years we have been experiencing a resurgence of opulent metal finishes such as copper, brass and bronze.

Candana have always prided ourselves in offering our clients infinite options on finishes other than chrome.  These luxe finishes are a reflection that bathrooms are becoming more individual and bespoke.

Visit our Woollahra showroom for examples of these stunning and on-trend finishes in basins, tapware and accessories.

Can a bathroom really be completed in a week?

Roca Urban basins, exclusive to Candana

Reality TV shows about building and interior design for the most part are a great thing, they have been exposing the general public to the great world of design and renovating.
But one down side to this reality TV building boom is the unrealistic expectations of building time lines. A quick renovation may seem like the best way to go, but cutting corners is never a good idea.

The bathroom design and construction process especially needs to be thought out and planned in great detail to ensure a successful outcome.

Normally, a realistic time line for setting up and renovating a bathroom is 3 weeks minimum.
Not only is the labour time consuming, but good quality product may sometimes take a few weeks to order in.
We've put together a brief time line of how long your reno should take;

Rip-out
The rip-out/demolition stage should ideally only take 1-2 days. This includes tearing down any old fixtures, tiling etc and stripping the room right back.

Rough-in
This is where your plumber and electrician will set up the essential items that need to go into the walls such as mixer bodies and wiring etc. This normally takes another 1-2 days.

Re-building
Your builder/plumber will now take about 2 days to do things such as building in baths, rendering and sheeting the walls. You'll also need at least 24 hours drying time for any render.

Waterproofing
Waterproofing is an important step that should not be rushed, this should take 2-4 days.

Tiling/Grouting
A good tiler is essential in a bathroom, once the tiler has finished his work (normally 2 days) the grouting will then take a another few days, so in total you should leave approx 1 week for this section.

Fitting-out
The most exciting of the bathroom steps would probably be the fit-out stage. It's when you can see all of your design and planning come to life as the builder/plumber/electrician fit out your sanitary ware, accessories and furniture. This will take 2-3 days.
At this time, you can now have shower screens, mirrors and any other custom items measured out and ready for fitting; manufacture of these can take up to 2 weeks.

It is of the utmost importance to have the best quality trades and installation on your bathroom as it is a room you will use countless times a day.
It should be practical, comfortable and still a reflection of your personal style and design aesthetic.

Our professional advice would be to not rush this most important process, in the long run it will save you money and stress which you want to avoid as much as possible during building/renovating.

For this segment, we normally interview the wonderful architects and designers we have the pleasure of working with. But today I thought I'd try something a little different and ask our very own managing director, Marc Reed to share his insights into design and bathrooms.

No one is more familiar with the workings of the bathroom industry than Marc who is the second generation owner of the store. He lives, breathes and sleeps design bathroomware and has gladly agreed to share a few of his thoughts.

Rapsel

We are excited to announce that in 2013, Candana have taken on Italian sanitaryware trend-setters Rapsel. This fashion forward manufacturer has been running for 30 years and has been creating new and avant garde products with the help of well known designers, including Matteo Thun, SODA and Matteo Nunziati.

Arne bath

From the very beginning, in the 70s, Rapsel carried forward its creative belief with consistency and determination.
The company’s policy is to operate in the area of contemporary design, identifying objects with highly innovative content and great quality of aesthetics and form.

Research is the basis of all projects. The bathroom design collections is addressed to a sophisticate public consisting of opinion leaders and consumers who lead to a stylish life and have good taste.

Rapsel’s trend setting objects have great character and in some cases they have even been described as ‘cult objects’ of bathroom design. These have become essential reference points in the evolution of the way of living and its models.

Just to give a very obvious example, the design approaches like those of Starck and Shiro Kuramata, although very different and distant from each other, co- exist harmoniously in Rapsel’s catalogue.

In fact, through the selection of the single projects, the real identity of the company emerges and becomes stronger. However these are not only objects of bathroom design and mere appearance, but they are functional and from the technical point of view perfectly made.
They are a tangible sign of what the future of domestic design is going to be.

Pantone's colour of 2013... Emerald Green

Pantone's colour of 2013 has been announced, and it is emerald green!
Personally, with all the brights and neon colours around I was surprised to see this particular shade of green but welcome it anyway.

This could be a sign of the sustainable impact on the world of design, as everything seems to have an organic edge and environmental inspiration behind it.

“Green is the most abundant hue in nature – the human eye sees more green than any other color in the spectrum,” says Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute. “Symbolically, Emerald brings a sense of clarity, renewal and rejuvenation, which is so important in today’s complex world.”

Whether it be in interiors or fashion, emerald is the colour of decadence, radiance and luxury so I'm sure we'll be seeing it everywhere in 2013.
