5 mins with... David Moses of Horizon Habitats

For this edition of '5 mins with...' we've interviewed well-known Sydney builder David Moses of Horizon HabitatsHorizon Habitats have been building and maintaining homes across Sydney’s Eastern suburbs and North Shore for the last 25 years.

They've built some of the most luxurious homes in Sydney (if not, Australia) and we've been lucky enough to supply the bathroom products for most of these homes.
Their work is impeccable and the highly professional staff are always a pleasure to deal with.

Describe your building work in 5 words…

Professional. High Quality. Service. Trust.

Which bathroom brand are you most likely to recommend to your clients?

Whatever they choose is PERFECT!!! My wife loves her Boyd Alternatives bath

Who are some local or international designers/architects/builders that you admire?

We work with a multitude of talented designers and architects in Sydney!!! SAOTA in South Africa are doing some great work over there.

If you could build anyone’s bathroom (past or present), whose would it be? And what would you do with it?

The original Moses! We’d need drains on both sides of the bathroom as he parted the waters!!!

What’s the most important thing you’ve learnt about building bathrooms?

-Locate the taps outside the shower, so you can turn the water on and get it nice and warm before you get wet!
-Have a small step down in to the shower to stop the water splash out
-A niche is always a good idea to put some shelves for shampoo and soap
-Another niche for washing feet/shaving legs is also useful

What is your favourite Candana bathroom product and why?

The “Urban Rain” – designed by Candana, of course!!!

We would like to thank David Moses and the HH team for their continued support and for sharing a small insight into their building.
Check out their website and blog for more info.

5 mins with... Marylou Sobel

Marylou Sobel is a Sydney-based interior designer with a huge portfolio and an even bigger passion for design. Over the past 25 years, Marylou has made her mark on design for creating timeless spaces with a bit of edge, and a lot of love.

We've had the pleasure of dealing with Marylou for many years and find her design aesthetic and professionalism a reflection of her hard work and immense talent.
Make sure to visit Marylou's new website and blog for further inspiration.

Describe your design aesthetic in 5 words…
Unique, detailed, eclectic, textures, functional

Which bathroom brand are you most likely to specify for your clients?
Boyd Alternatives, Brodware, Marblo Mojo, Philippe Starck

What inspires you to create beautiful spaces?
A huge passion for design, a keen eye, a love for textiles and all things beautiful. A desire to make peoples homes and workplaces a special, functional and aesthetic place to be in, timeless and comfortable and a place they can be proud of

Who are some international designers/architects that you admire?
Axel Vervoordt, Christian Liaigre, Kit Kemp, Piet Boon, Berni De La Cuona

If you could design anyone’s bathroom (past or present), whose would it be? And what would you do with it?
Mariano Fortuny (1871-1949) a very avant-garde designer of fabrics as well as being a painter, engraver, sculptor, photographer, set designer, lamp designer and more.
I could use his fabulous fabrics, silk or cotton, to upholster and line the walls. A Fortuny chandelier, Venetian mirrors, high ceilings and large windows with views of the Rialto bridge in Venice. It would be sumptuous and luxurious and a very special place to bathe in. I may even just design it for me...

What is your favourite bathroom product? Why?
I love Boyd Alternatives because the designs are so organic and have such presence, they really do make a statement in a bathroom.

We would like to thank Marylou for sharing her beautiful work and design insight with us.

Colour trend... Metal finishes

Over the past couple of years we have been experiencing a resurgence of opulent metal finishes such as copper, brass and bronze.

Candana have always prided ourselves in offering our clients infinite options on finishes other than chrome.  These luxe finishes are a reflection that bathrooms are becoming more individual and bespoke.

Visit our Woollahra showroom for examples of these stunning and on-trend finishes in basins, tapware and accessories.

5 mins with... Hare & Klein

Sydney home

Hare & Klein Pty Ltd formed in 1988, is an experienced and respected team of interior designers committed to creating original and individual interiors of quality that stand the test of time.

Hare & Klein have been a valuable client of Candana’s for almost two decades and continue to design and specify some of the most beautiful bathrooms we have had the pleasure of working on.

Meryl Hare and the team at Hare & Klein took some time out to answer our little questionnaire and came up with some fantastic answers...

Describe your design aesthetic in 5 words…
Timeless, individual, practical, elegant and textural.

Sydney home

Which bathroom brand are you most likely to specify for your clients?
It is project dependent, but Boyd Alternatives and Gessi are favourites.

Bellevue Hill residence

Double Bay residence

What inspires you to create beautiful spaces?
Every bathroom is a blank canvas and challenge to create something beautiful and special within the design language of the overall project. The daily rituals of bathing have the potential to become an enriching experience in a well designed space.

Beach house

Who are some international designers/architects that you admire?
Christian Liagre, Piet Boon, Andree Putman.

North Coast beach house

If you could design anyone’s bathroom (past or present), whose would it be? And what would you do with it?
Cleopatra! A bathroom open to the sky, with a generous round bath on a high pedestal in the centre, carved out of limestone, filled with milk and attended by a team of eunuchs! (lucky Cleopatra, she seems to be a popular choice for our designers! -Candana)

Vaucluse residence

What is your favourite bathroom product? Why?
Our team of designers loves the Gessi Goccia silver or black finished basin. It’s contemporary but voluptuous.

Carriageworks
