Trend: Modern Memphis

If you haven't noticed, modern Memphis is back and in a big way.

Geometric lines, marble and clashing patterns: all tell-tale signs of the 80's mega trend founded by Ettore Sottsass.

 

This time around, there seems to be a bit of restraint exercised. The pieces are more refined, sophisticated and understated.

 

Can this trend be translated into bathroom design? Why not.

 

Stand by Norm Architects

 

 

Modernist details of 1920s and ’30s Victorian interiors are reinterpreted in the ‘Stand’ product line by Danish Norm Architects.

The simple, minimalist bathroom and home furnishings were created for Italian company ex.t, and will be released during Milan Design Week 2015.

 

 

 

In line with the soft essentialism characteristic of the studio, the collection visually communicates a sense of spatial calm and restfulness. Geometric forms, neutral colours, and authentic Tuscan production work together to create a distinct character true to influential insights drawn from spare, yet enchanting Danish landscapes.

 

Four products are featured in the line: ‘Stand’ bathtub and washbasin, ‘Hat’ lamps, and ‘Felt’ shelf, all of which were finalized via a strict principle of reduction. The studio reinterpreted excessively decorated furnishings of the early 20th century, stripping them to a point of equitability where nothing more could be added or taken away. ‘Stand’ products are manufactured using living tech® material that superbly compliments black metal components for a holistic sense of lightness.

Vola: new releases

Iconic tapware brand VOLA have just released a brand new range of showers and we cannot contain our excitement!

Originally designed by Arne Jacobsen in 1968, VOLA tapware is a design classic that is only added to rarely. So you know when they release something it's going to be special and complimentary to Jacobsen's original masterpiece.

T60

The Round Series hand shower is a seamless extension of the VOLA Round-head shower.

They are based on the same design DNA.

The core design elements of the Round Series are the spherical shape and the narrow ring. This elegant ring can be seen clearly in the side view. The slender cylindrical form of the supporting tube extends behind and beyond the shower head, subtly emphasising the latter’s status as the key element.

The shower rail also relates to existing VOLA design elements. It is attached to the wall with a circular fixing, matching and adjacent to the round hand shower head – creating a horizontal harmony with the shower taps.

When ready for use, the Round Series hand shower head can be held in place by the optional shower rail. A button responds easily to one hand, sliding it to the best height for effective showering.

070W & 080W

The luxury private bathroom, hotel spa or sauna should be an oasis of tranquillity. An escape from worldly matters. A place to rejuvenate the body, and allow the mind to empty and the soul to meditate.

Into this environment of total relaxation and well being, VOLA has introduced two new therapeutic products: the Kneipp Hose 070W and the Waterfall Shower 080W.

Both reflect the continuity of VOLA classic designs. Both illustrate the innovation for which VOLA is sought after by leading architects and designers across the globe.

The last few days of our trip were upon us and we were off to the design centre/factory I was most looking forward to, Duravit.

Because our Duravit portion started on a Sunday, Duravit organised for us to have a leisure day which included an enjoyable lunch in Gutach followed by tobogganing down a mountain!

The day was warm and lovely, and the toboggans provided a little bit of adventure and physical exercise- which was much needed after a week of non-stop eating.

If you are not already aware, the Duravit Design Centre was designed by none other than Phillipe Starck. Driving up to the centre was spectacular, amongst the tranquil backdrop of the Black Forest emerges a sparkling silver box encasing a giant toilet. Brilliant.

Training was conducted by our lovely host, Joanna who is extremely knowledgeable and passionate about Duravit. She talked us through the history of the company including the explanation behind the Duravit logo, the wood grouse. It is a very rare bird found in the Black Forest and has been a symbol for Duravit's attachment to their roots and the respect they have for their natural environment.

The ceramic factory tour was a completely eye-opening experience. I was so surprised to see how much human contact is involved in the production. Clay pieces were being hand finished by an employee who had worked with Duravit over 20 years, the glazing was hand done, the quality controls were overseen many times by many different people. The whole production was outstanding and I have now seen with my own eyes why it is such a highly valued, quality product.

Duravit only use locally sourced ingredients for their ceramic, and recycle everything they can. They even break up and send damaged product (it was very hard to spot the damages!) to companies who can recycle the material to make roads etc.

We also visited the Duravit design centre showroom and were shown a great presentation on the Sensowash seat. Sensowash was installed in a few of the working bathrooms, so we all had a turn at testing them out. Once you've used it, you can't go back to a normal toilet!

Our last day at Duravit and Germany included a short trip to the Schenkensell furniture factory.

We've always loved Duravit furniture at Candana but to see the artisan manufacture of these pieces in person further cements our belief in them. Again, each piece is given a personal touch; hand-finishing, hand-polishing. All of the furniture is made to order in this factory, nothing is kept in stock. So when you order a piece of Duravit furniture, you will be getting something made especially for you by a German Duravit-trained skilled professional.

After this tour we headed straight to Frankfurt for our flights home.

We all returned to our respective states feeling confident about the brands, full of delicious German food and with a new group of inter-state friends.
