Surprise Inspiration... NYFW 2014

Normally when we post our fashion surprise inspiration posts we feature the runway trends, this time we've been inspired by the street fashion in NY during fashion week 2014.

  Each fashion week brings out the best in street fashion, so its only normal that these trend-setters inspire our interiors also (including bathrooms!).

Here are some of our favourite street looks paired with some bathroom design ideas.

HÔTEL AMERICANO NYC

Located in the middle of Chelsea's art gallery district lies the cool, industrial Hotel Americano.

Designed by New York-based Mexican architect Enrique Norten, this hotel boasts 56 rooms of Latino luxury and New York chic.

The hotel is part of the Grupo Habita, an exclusive group of architectural hotels by Carlos Couturier and Moises Micha. 

Their first American hotel couldn't be positioned in a better spot. In buzzing Manhattan, the hotel sits across from the Highline and is surrounded by delicious restaurants and trendy bars.

Couturier worked with Paris-based interior designer Arnaud Montigny to fit out the rooms and interiors. They feature Japanese style minimalism and some of the most stunning and luxurious bathrooms you could imagine!

Up above the bustling streets of Manhattan you'll find the hotels rooftop restaurant, bar and pool set against the background of the Manhattan skyline. 

Visiting NYC soon? Even if you aren't, consider taking a trip to Chelsea just to stay in this boutique and urban New York retreat.

Bathrooms: Batman vs. Bruce Wayne

During the action-packed 162 minutes of The Dark Knight Rises, I found myself thinking about the bathrooms of Batman.

I was torn between an art deco room of opulence and a super high-tech utility bathroom. Until I realised, just like the man himself it would have to be split into two completely different personalities, except for the one important element tying the two together... the dark.

Bruce Wayne's magnificent mansion would include countless bathrooms, but we've focused on the Powder Room where Vicki Vale or Selina Kyle might visit to freshen up. It is an elegant, dark space with high gloss surfaces and the complete reflection of Bruce's money, power and sophistication.

Away from the decadence of Wayne Manor lies Batman's lair, with his high tech gadgets and dark dreary surrounds Batman requires a bathroom to completely relax after a tough day fighting the crime of Gotham City.

We've given Batman a sunken concrete pool for his ice baths, an impressive rain panel (aka shower) which features lighting, temperature control and fragrance functions (all accessible by an electronic control) and of course some sleek hooks to hang his bat suit off before Alfred arrives to have it dry cleaned. The room is minimal and sleek with only the best and most tech-savvy fittings.

 Ceiling mounted shower heads. Everyone loves a shower that feels like rainfall.

Cubby House by Edwards Moore Architects

Edwards Moore are a Melbourne based architecture firm who pride themselves on supplying bespoke architectural services to clients of all types. From residential and commercial projects to music stages and exhibition spaces.

Amongst their repertoire of work, they have extended and refurbished a Fitzroy apartment overlooking a public swimming pool. They used an interesting material throughout, OSB (Oriented Strand Board) which is typically used for sheathing in walls, floors and roofs. Its completely unique and creates a fantastic feature which is quite striking against a mostly white scheme.

The bathrooms are a stunning example of minimal and classic fittings with unique finishes. Using OSB on doors and furniture with a backdrop of a classic white, brick patterned tile has proved extremely effective and also highlights the black tapware used throughout the bathrooms.

One of my favourite details of the bathrooms is the shower area, Edwards Moore used an angled ceiling which includes a circular hole in the shower recess. Not only does this bring in a huge amount of natural light, looking into the bathroom you see a magnificent rainfall of water which seems to come from no where.

I should also mention the Laufen Palomba vessel basin used in the bathroom, the asymmetrical shape of this basin designed by the amazing Roberto and Ludovica Palomba reflects perfectly the angular lines of the surrounding architecture.

Overall this is a super stylish home and it proves that taking risks (i.e. with materials and finishes) can be well worth it!
