We are just about to receive our new front window display which will feature the Laufen Mimo range. This fun and fresh range includes a super-cute graphic on their vanities and shower curtains. So it got me thinking about shower curtains.

Let's face it, in recent years the shower curtain hasn't been the stylish of bathroom accessories but I'm here to show you that things have changed and these once rubber-duck-clad plastic sheets have turned into chic and even artful additions to the shower/bath!

Cleopatra! A bathroom open to the sky, with a generous round bath on a high pedestal in the centre, carved out of limestone, filled with milk and attended by a team of eunuchs! (lucky Cleopatra, she seems to be a popular choice for our designers! -Candana)

Our team of designers loves the Gessi Goccia silver or black finished basin. It’s contemporary but voluptuous.

Lighting has always played a massive role in any sort of design, whether it be interior, architectural or even civil.

It can be just as emotive as colour or texture and completely transform a space.

It's extremely important to take lighting into consideration when designing a bathroom.

Whether it be a fabulous feature pendant hanging over a basin, a strip of LED's recessed into the walls or under lighting a bathtub, the right lighting will provoke a different emotion and transform your space into a bathing oasis.

Sporting Chance Charity Run

Managing director of Candana, Marc Reed had two resolutions this year;

the first was to get fit and the second was to do something worthwhile for charity.

He started running a little over 2 months ago and has set himself a goal of running the Sydney Morning Herald half marathon on Sunday May 20th.

"While I set myself this goal I thought why not use this as a way to raise awareness and funding for a worthwhile cause, the Sporting Chance cancer Foundation" says Marc.

This non-for-profit organisation was established in 1998 by Mark Taylor, Reg Gasnier, Raelene Boyle and Bob Skilton. They are committed to financially supporting children with cancer and also offering a number of research scholarships to doctors and scientists to help with ways to better overcome cancer. For more information visit http://www.sportingchance.com.au/.

I'm sure most people reading this have at least one time been affected by cancer (whether it be directly or through a friend or family member). It is an unavoidable part of life but by raising awareness and some much needed money for research we can slowly start fighting back.

"When Nick, Sebastian, and I set this up we never thought anyone would want to do something as crazy as run a half marathon. It seems it is not such a crazy idea and we have now decided to open the event for anyone wishing to join us. We have now gone from a team of 3 to a team of 7 within a few days. If anyone wishes to join our team please email me directly and I will fill you in on the details."

Anyone interested in donating to this great cause do so directly at the Sporting Chance cancer foundation website. Please state on the donation that it is for the 'half marathon' so we can keep tabs on the amount donated. By doing this an automatic tax deductible receipt will be made for you.

On the 26th of May the SCCF will hold their annual race day and Marc and his team hope to present them with a cheque on the day with the money raised by this run. Any donation big or small would be very much appreciated!

RR House by Studio Guilherme Torres

This super cool penthouse apartment in São Paulo, Brazil was designed by young architect Guilherme Torres.

Guilherme Torres designed the space around the bookshelf that surrounds the living room, this shelf is by no means just a book shelf. It houses collections, electronics and is also a workstation!

Polymer cement was used on walls, floors and stairs throughout the apartment so bringing in some colour fittings and furnishings was required to soften the space. They took their palette from the 70's and used block colours throughout, including painting the pool table blue.

The pops of colour look fantastic against the muted back drop, making this one of my favourite apartments!

U.S Bathrooms

The Americans have always been known to have a 'bigger is better' mentality to all aspects of life; food, architecture, cars etc.
So it makes sense that their bathrooms are typically large, full of life and personality.

They have no fear of wallpapers and colour; dark finishes such as brass, copper and heavy timbers are combined with decorative lighting and textures to achieve an elegant end result.

We see a lot of traditional designs and very classic forms, over-all very furnished bathrooms that are an extension of their homes.

Australian Bathrooms

Australia is a young country with a young and fresh design aesthetic.
Natural light is an important part of Australian design and bathrooms are often light, airy and quite practical spaces.

We are seeing more bright colours introduced into the bathroom, but the stark white is a consistent design base, almost like a white canvas ready for its splashes of colour.
Features such as lighting, tiles and stools create a personalised touch to the Aussie bathroom.

We all know that inspiration for an interior can often come from the most unexpected places and on my most recent trip to my home town Siracusa (on the Italian island of Sicily) I found myself imagining amazing colour schemes for interiors just from the natural landscapes.

Gorgeous greens with brass accents, brilliant yellows with natural timbers and red highlights on white backdrops.
So if you're stuck on colour/concept ideas, use this as an excuse and go on a holiday!

With a hectic 2011 wrapping up, Candana had no time to celebrate Christmas. So we decided to take a wonderful weekend away in the new year to relax and have some fun before starting up again in 2012. Kangaroo Valley was the perfect place to do that.

The tiny NSW town of Kangaroo Valley (population 320) is so hidden that you wouldn't know it existed unless you went looking. It's located midway between Moss Vale and Nowra, about 140km southwest of Sydney.

It is surrounded by lush greenery and curious wildlife (yes, there are Kangaroo's everywhere!)and some of the most beautiful and delicious wineries in Australia.

We spent the first day exploring said wineries including Silos Estate, Two Figs winery and Mountain Ridge winery. Then spent the next day enjoying the gorgeous surrounds with a round of 9-hole golf (my official role of golf buggy driver was just as enjoyable).

If you get a chance to visit Kangaroo Valley, do it. Its a stunning little town that will remind you of the amazing places we have right in our backyard.

P.S. Make sure you stop at the Old Store to try the 'World's Best Pies'

Red Bull headquarters, Amsterdam by Sid Lee Architecture

OK, clearly this one is our favourite because of the bathrooms. A lot of the time, these super-cool ultra designed workplaces will completely forget about the bathrooms and include a crappy (pun intended) toilet and boring basin. In this case, they kept with the theming all the way through, including the bathrooms. Well done Sid Lee, well done.

Skype office, Sweden by PS Arkitektur

The colours in this office space are just beautiful. Bright, happy and glowing, a definite cure for a bad day at work. The architects wanted to reflect the brand’s playful spirit and its mission to connect the world in the working environment, they did this by using fun furniture shapes and light-fittings.

ANZ Centre, Melbourne by Hassell

This modern establishment accommodates 6,500 employees over 130,000 square metres and includes spaces for work, play, creation and relaxation. Hassell have created a contemporary and welcoming mega-centre which connects every aspect of this work space.

Selgas Cano Architecture office, Madrid

You can't get much better inspiration for an architecture firm than the natural woods of Spain. Half of this amazing tunnel is underground and the other half under a glass ceiling, bringing nature closer to the employees.

Facebook, USA by Studio O+A

This to me, looks like a designed version of what I imagine American 'college life' to be. O+A Studio used eclectic and random furniture, warehouse and industrial elements and of course some DJ decks. I like.

Sculp(it) Office, Antwerp

Located in Antwerp's former red light district, this 2.4m wide building spans over 4 levels and acts as work and living space for architect duo Sculp(it). Each level represents a different living/work space; ground floor is the office, the second floor is the dining room, the third floor is the living room and the fourth the bedroom. There is also a bathtub on the roof and the building turns into a light installation at night!

Escada head office, Munich by Studio Carbonale

Just like the fashion house itself, the Escada head office in Munich is luxurious, opulent and detailed. I imagine stepping into this office would be like stepping into a jewellery box.

Vodafone head office, Portugal by Barbosa Guimaraes Arquitectos

This super modern building was designed with the motto 'Vodafone Life, Life in Motion' in mind. Barbosa Guimaraes Arquitectos created an angular building to show constant motion and unbalance. This is an iconic building if I ever saw one.

Azure Office, Ukraine by Sergey Makhno

Sergey Makhno took the designer accessory office name literally and designed a blue toned office space with hip furniture and fittings.

The brilliant blue's have been set against cool, crisp materials such as concrete to create a stunning work space.

Manchester Square offices, London by SHH Architects

If Bruce Wayne existed and had an office, it would look like this. Designed by SHH Architects, this very gentleman's-club-looking office interior is all business and sophistication. They have combined the perfect elements of modern and classic design without being too over-styled. Cigar, anyone?

A beautiful home in Brooklyn

If you have a spare $3.75 million (that's USD, by the way) laying around and would like to move to ol' NY, you are in luck! This amazing home owned by America's J.Crew creative director and president, Jenna Lyons is on the market and looking pretty darn fine if I don't say so myself.

The home is an eclectic mix of modern furniture and antiques with pops of colour and texture that seem to come together so flawlessly! The bathrooms are a beautiful extension of the traditional aspects of the home while the dark walls and brass fixtures provide an edgy twist.

While I day dream about buying this home, I'm sure the lucky family who purchase it will be very happy here.

Unless you've been living under a rock, you would've noticed that neon is back in a big way! Fashion, interiors and everything else in the world of design has been bitten by the fluorescent bug, so why not incorporate that into your bathroom?

Neon accents are a great way to brighten up your interiors. An acid green soap dispenser or a fluro pink bathtub in an all white space will instantly give your bathroom a modern, updated look.

Today I have a very exciting project to share with you by architects Kann Finch Group and BKH and interior design by Thomas Hamel.

The Stamford Penthouses, located in the historic Sydney suburb of The Rocks are the complete embodiment of luxury living. 30 levels, 122 exclusive apartments and the highest quality fittings you could imagine. The building features spectacular views of the surrounding harbour and CBD, classic timeless style filled with natural light and unprecedented spaciousness (including 2.7m ceilings! In an apartment!).

The bathrooms are no exception. Using only the highest quality products, such as Kaldewei baths, Laufen sanitaryware and Axor Starck showers and tapware the bathrooms are a complete reflection of this elegant landmark.

It's no secret that I love colour, so when I came across a New York townhouse designed by Ghislaine Vinas I knew this was the start of a design infatuation.

Ghislaine (pronounced "ghee-lan") was born in The Netherlands, raised in South Africa and currently lives in New York, so it's no wonder her work has a certain international sensibility and freedom about it.

Ghislaine's work is just out-of-this-world amazing and the way she uses colour and texture make me want to cry tears of design joy!

It's very theatrical and almost cartoon-like but it works and transports you to your own contemporary wonderland.

There is a sense of fun, humor and enthusiasm in Ghislain's work, which I find so refreshing and could never tire of.

Italian for hand made, Made a Mano are a Danish tile company who supply gorgeous hand-painted and hand-printed ceramics made from Cotto and lava stone (from Mount Etna in Sicily!).

The company was founded in 2001. Their ambition was to create a collection of tiles, countertops and sinks, combining ancient traditional handicraft with modern techniques. Revealing a sure sense of beauty and style.

And seriously, how fun are the hand-painted letters?!

The 21st of October at 6.30pm the Candana crew made their way down to the beautiful Andrew 'Boy' Charlton Pool for a presentation by Nicole Roesler of Kaldewei Germany.

We were greeted by the lovely Bathe team and enjoyed champagne and delicious canapes while chatting with Sydney's premium architects and designers.

Nicole presented a great insight into the direction the iconic steel bath company is heading. A quick history of the bathing experience reminded us that the bath has been an important part of our history since the beginning of time.

Kaldewei are re-introducing a luxurious bathing experience and are presenting the bathroom as a sanctuary and place of relaxation, rather than a wash-room to be used quickly.

For many years the kitchen has been the heart of the home, and no we aren't suggesting you entertain while soaking in the tub but the bathroom should be the most important room of a home. It's where you can relax after a long hard day, wash away your troubles under a steaming hot shower and appreciate life in a relaxed atmosphere.

Inspired by the Picasso painting 'The Bather', this amazing residential project sits on the edge of a 70-metre high cliff at the exclusive local suburb of Dover Heights.

The magnificent home has been designed by Durbach Block Jaggers to reflect the fluid lines of the surrounding landscape and they've used mid-century, Scandinavian furniture and fittings to furnish the interior.

A beautiful piece of architecture by very inspirational Aussie architects.

Cersaie 2011

This year I was lucky enough to attend the Cersaie Bathroom and Ceramics fair in Bologna, Italy.

I visited the fair in 2009 and was quite curious to see how much it would change or whether it would be affected at all by the recent world economic state.

I have to start by saying the fair was as massive and impressive as ever. Cersaie is held in an exhibition centre which spreads over 176,000m2, there are about 1,016 exhibitors (approx 750 of those are Italian) and is visited by roughly 82,500 architects, designers and importers over the 4 days of the show. So in summary, its huge.

Luckily we don't sell tiles, so I could cut out half of the halls but it still tired me immensely and forced me (as touristy as it sounds) to take the little courtesy train from hall to hall over the 2 days I spent at the fair.

I should also mention photography isn't allowed so all the images taken were on the sneaky (and if you're a Cersaie official, my friend Mrs Feyk took the photos).

One of the first stands I visited was Gessi. They wowed me last time with a tremendous stand which included a cafe, bar and stylish Italians sipping coffee, and delivered again this year. I was given a tour of the stand and got to see their newest electronic range ISpa. The range was designed with the I-Pod shape as inspiration and features temperature and pressure electronic controls on top of the spout. Very sleek, very clever. Of course they also displayed the stunning Goccia range but this time all were working models which was great to see.

Simas had a fantastically kitsch and colourful stand. They displayed their ranges against OSB walls and neon lights, creating a very industrial and fun display that was extremely effective and drew me in immediately. What can I say? I'm a sucker for neon lights!

Antonio Lupi is a favourite of mine, their stand is always beautifully styled and very, very popular so with that comes their very strict no photos or touching policy! Unfortunately not even Mrs. Feyk could take pictures to share with you. They showcased their contemporary freestanding baths and basins against traditional elements. Resin oval baths sat by Louis armchairs and Carrara marble freestanding basins in front of renaissance style paintings. Divine.

At Cersaie, Vola team up with Rapsel and Nito for their stand to put together a classic, sophisticated range of products that compliment each other perfectly. Vola displayed their new R-Series, a range of wall mounted tissue dispensers and waste bins which have already won awards and are a favourite of the Candana team. And of course all the Vola classics were there, HV1's (basin mixers) KV1's (kitchen mixers) and the more recent FS3's (freestanding showers).

Giants in the bathrooms world, Hansgrohe and Laufen rarely disappoint. Hansgrohe showcased the wonderful Urquiola, PuraVida and Bouroullec ranges, which as featured previously on the blog here, offers a huge array of options and configurations.

Laufen kept their display simple but effective whilst highlighting the additions to their already extremely popular Palomba and Alessi ranges.

During my wanderings through the fair I discovered an Italian company called Cielo, who displayed their very alluring freestanding basins against grey, textured walls. Once I tore myself away from them (the walls, that is) I noticed they have a new range 'Amedeo' designed by none other than Karim Rashid. The elegant lines in these basins are a perfect example of Karim's understanding of unique shapes.

Known for their mosaic tiles, Bisazza launched their second line of bathroom furnishings at Cersaie this year. Designed by Marcel Wanders the aptly named 'Wanders Collection' is like nothing I've seen before in bathroomware. It's ornate, shapely and a little OTT, but I love it! The hints of red in the tapware are perfect against the black, white and crystal. And yes, that is a crystal chandelier shower!

Bisazza Bagno's first range 'The Hayon Collection' is a contemporary take on 1930's shapes and incorporated mirrors, tapware and lighting into the basins. The finishes include black, white and radiant copper. Its a totally conclusive and practical range.

Finally, Galassia was another Italian brand I hadn't seen before and I was drawn to their stand right away. They very cleverly displayed their sanitaryware with an artistic edge. They extended their console legs in a sculptural way that was very effective. And I absolutely loved the 'hand' accessories, so fun!

In conclusion, it seems bathroomware is having a bit of a break from being too serious which I think is great. Have a bit of fun with it, add a crazy bright coloured tap or a fantastic light fitting to your bathroom and instantly transform the space from 'wash-room' to a place where you can escape from every day life.

Cubby House by Edwards Moore Architects

Edwards Moore are a Melbourne based architecture firm who pride themselves on supplying bespoke architectural services to clients of all types. From residential and commercial projects to music stages and exhibition spaces (please excuse unintentional rhyming).

Amongst their repertoire of work, they have extended and refurbished a Fitzroy apartment overlooking a public swimming pool. They used an interesting material throughout, OSB (Oriented Strand Board) which is typically used for sheathing in walls, floors and roofs. Its completely unique and creates a fantastic feature which is quite striking against a mostly white scheme.

The bathrooms are a stunning example of minimal and classic fittings with unique finishes. Using OSB on doors and furniture with a backdrop of a classic white, brick patterned tile has proved extremely effective and also highlights the black tapware used throughout the bathrooms.

One of my favourite details of the bathrooms is the shower area, Edwards Moore used an angled ceiling which includes a circular hole in the shower recess. Not only does this bring in a huge amount of natural light, looking into the bathroom you see a magnificent rainfall of water which seems to come from no where.

I should also mention the Laufen Palomba vessel basin used in the bathroom, the asymmetrical shape of this basin designed by the amazing Roberto and Ludovica Palomba reflects perfectly the angular lines of the surrounding architecture.

Overall this is a super stylish home and it proves that taking risks (i.e. with materials and finishes) can be well worth it!

Founded in 1985, this Italian family run business is constantly pushing the boundaries in bathroomware and coming up with some of the most unique and creative pieces we see.

The company has a young, dynamic philosophy and aren't afraid to experiment with styles and finishes to suit the current design demands.

Over the years they have worked with infamous designers and architects to supply us with some of our all-time favourite ranges such as the fantastically avant garde Only One tapware inspired by the pipe work

usually concealed.

One of my favourite things about IB is the fun they have with naming their ranges. Which brings me to their newest range available to us, Dr. Jeckyll and Mr. Hyde. A sleek square line of tapware which include a contemporary loop lever and the option of a cascading spout or solid (depending on which personality you prefer of course i.e. Dr. Jeckyll or Mr. Hyde).

One of the newer ranges by IB, Batlo, was designed with the simple but oh so clever bottle shape in mind. An item we are constantly seeing in everyday life was turned into a stylish tap by architect Giulio Iacchetti.

Another of our favourites is the Love Me range which was one of the first mixers to include an open cascading spout. This unique way to supply water makes it a joy to wash your hands. Ah, so calming.

Candana Client Bathrooms

Today I would like to share with you one of Candana's most recent projects, designed by one of Sydney's finest architects Victoria Dennis of TDDP and built by master builder Peter Dunkley of APD Building. This Eastern Suburbs family home is a fine example of contemporary, sleek design in Sydney and we had the pleasure of seeing it completed recently.

The first thing we noticed about this home was it's complete abundance of natural light.
Victoria used Vola tapware and the stylish simplicity of the Omvivo C-Design and Geo washplane basins throughout which perfectly complement the crisp design of the home.

The main ensuite is completely flooded with natural light due to a breathtaking glass ceiling over the double shower (imagine showering under a rainy sky? Amazing!). The Geo double washplane creates an elongated line that instantly draws your eye to the roof-less shower recess.

They've used amazing feature lighting in the Powder Room to create a stunning ambiance.
Mounting a washplane and tapware onto a mirrored wall is often seen as risky but here is a perfect example of how chic it looks when done correctly! The green glass pendants reflect off the mirrored wall and furnish the space beautifully creating that essential wow factor to the Powder Room.

These bathrooms (the entire home for that matter) have been designed with the clients needs in mind and are a perfect harmony of practicality and contemporary design. White, chrome and hints of colour have created a sleek, fresh look which will never date.

We'd like to thank Victoria Dennis, Peter Dunkley and our valued clients for sharing this beautiful home with us. Seeing the finished product of a project we work on is so rewarding and we are truly thankful for being a part of some of the most gorgeous bathrooms in Sydney, this one included!

Bringing a bit of plant life into the bathroom is a great way of warming up what can sometimes be a clinical, stark area of the home. NHOW HOTEL

Located in the heart of Berlin, the Nhow hotel is the first of its kind, a hotel dedicated to music!

This hotel is for serious musos and music lovers, offering round the clock concierge services to deliver a Gibson guitar to your suite (because who doesn't have a midnight craving for some rockin' riffs?).

The rooms are equipped with the latest technology; IPod connections, over 30 TV and 100 music stations and state of the art entertainment systems.

The hotel also houses not one but two recording studios, their own music manager and is regularly hosting some of the hottest gigs in Berlin.

The interior is designed by none other than the colour genius, Karim Rashid and hosts an array of guests which include business travellers, international jet-setters, party animals and the biggest bands. True to Rashid's iconic style the interiors feature fresh colours, rounded forms and clear lines that perfectly reflect sound waves.

This dynamic space is constantly moving and changing. The art and multimedia displayed throughout are arranged 3 times a year to reflect the current trends in fashion, music and art. Nhow have even collaborated with Berlin graffiti artists to design one of the walls of the hotel with a mural inspired by the Berlin wall.

I have a feeling this is one hotel that rock stars won't be trashing.

Frost Accessories

I am very excited and proud to announce that the amazing Frost range of accessories (spotted by yours truly at Melbourne DesignEx this year) is now on display and available through Candana!

Established in 2002, Frost Design has filled a gap in the market with a range of designer accessories which scream style. They are constantly working alongside external designers to come up with specific ranges to suit the architectural/design industry and aren't afraid to do something different and push the boundaries.

I had the pleasure of meeting Hans Jorgen Frost at Designex, the enthusiasm and excitement about his product exudes from him and its easy to see why.

Lulu is a gorgeous range of hooks perfect for, well everywhere! They are a simple yet sophisticated hook and are available in 6 different finishes. These great hooks (which we've nicknamed 'the speakers') are a perfect addition to any style bathroom.

Camouflage, designed by Busk + Hertzog is such a beautiful product it could easily just be mounted as a sculptural wall piece. Camouflage is available in two sizes and many finishes including two greens, plum and yellow!

Wishbone is another spectacular range comprised of side-tables (perfect for freestanding baths) and freestanding coat hooks available in numerous bright colours.

Many of these ranges have won design accolades including the prestigious Red Dot and Good Design awards.

Basically, I could go on forever describing how fabulous each range is, so the best thing to do would be to check them out on our website or come into the showroom and see them in the frost, I mean flesh!

Super Starck

A personal hero of mine and I'm sure of many other design enthusiasts out there, Starck has a way of turning the most mundane of items into practical design icons.

There probably isn't a design area that Starck hasn't explored, from hotels and restaurants to mega-yachts and lighting and everything in between, this living icon has shared with the world a sense of light-hearted creativeness that is sometimes forgotten in modern design/architecture.

When I initially joined the bathroom industry, the first thing that caught my eye was that Philippe Starck had designed numerous products for the bathroom. So you can imagine my hysteria when told our very own Marc (managing director of Candana) was to be in the presence of the great man for a product launch dinner in Germany last year. I sat with mounting anticipation as he retold the jokes and the way Philippe (yes, I'll pretend we are on a first name basis now) spoke so passionately about his designs and creations.

Over the years, Starck has designed many ranges for Duravit and Hansgrohe and his products never date or look over-done. One of our highest selling toilet suites till this day is the Starck 3 and the Axor Starck range of tapware is used throughout our own bathrooms and kitchens.

Jasper Eder (biographer) writes that 'Philippe Starck is a tireless and rebellious citizen of the world'. A Perfect description of a man that will go down in history for his many achievements and we constantly look forward with baited breath to see what he'll come up with next!

Candana Website Launch Party!

After 18 months of blood, sweat and tears (ok it wasn't that dramatic, but it was close!) it was finally time to introduce our industry changing website to the world!

Wednesday 27th July 6.30pm, the scene was set with both Candana buildings completely awash with water reflective lights, a copper bath filled with cider and funky beats pumping down the street.

The Candana team were busy showing our designers/architects the website while some delicious canapes were served. Some of our favourite new products were on display, including the fantastic PuraVida range by Hansgrohe and we were hearing great feedback on the recent showroom makeover.

The award for the most ironic moment of the night would have to go to the party guest who was locked in the bathrooms for 20 minutes and had to be rescued by Richard (one of the directors of Candana) kicking the door down. And by complete chance (ahem) this guest won second prize in our lucky door raffle!

Every guest left with a smile on their face, knowledge of our new specifier section and of course a goodie bag filled with fabulous treats.

So in short, a great night was had by all and we'd like to thank all our wonderful guests, Bathe and Umm..Communications for making the night such a huge success!

Please sir, may I have some Moore?!

Known for his minimal, sleek approach to architecture and design, Ian Moore has recently created a fantastic black and white home in our backyard (Surry Hills) and we think it is monochromatic genius!

Originally built in 1895 as a grocery warehouse, the Strelein Warehouse is a beautiful blend of black and white and simple, clean fixtures.

Glazing the top of the bathroom walls has bathed the room in glorious light and Moore's use of white and mirror maximise the space and open up the room to create a spacious bathing area.

This warehouse conversion has been fitted with Vola stainless steel tapware throughout (including the kitchen). The magnificent lines of Vola accentuate the minimalism of the warehouse and the use of the stainless steel finish gives a commercial edge.

The Strelein warehouse is another example of the 'less is more' approach beautifully reflected in Ian Moore's work.
So clearly in this case, less is Moore.

Do the white thing

As you most probably know by now, Candana love colour! But we all know that there is nothing more classic and stylish than a minimal white bathroom. Gone are the days of matching peach, turquoise and baby blue sanitary ware (and I for one am very happy about that). We are all about embracing a clean, sleek bathroom design filled with beautiful shapes and texture. Sanitaryware should act as your blank canvas and provide a beautiful base for feature products such as coloured towels and accessories. Top 10... Hotel Bathrooms

La Maison Pujol (Conques Sur Orbiel, France)

This luxury B&B in the south of France is the epitome of eclectic chic. Located 10 minutes from Carcassonne, it features 5 guestrooms that seem to perfectly combine modern eclecticism and classic design. Phillipe Phi converted an old provincial winery into his own boutique hotel with unique bathrooms that house traditional tapware fittings and sanitaryware with quirky accessories like the large coloured letters.

Sleep in the City (Antwerp, Belgium)

These individual suites located in Antwerp’s fashion district are very close to restaurants and nightlife so are the perfect base for shopping and culture. These cool apartments have an all white palette with accents of gold or black (depending on the one you choose). The bathrooms are just as luxurious as the bedrooms with freestanding bathtubs under opulent mirrors and plush curtains.

Hotel on Rivington (New York, US)

Described as ’21 floors of cool’, this lower east side hotel is contemporary, lively and spacious. It boasts floor to ceiling windows (including the shower recess) and fabulously stylish bathrooms with steam showers and Japanese style soaker tubs.

Hotel Basico (Playa Del Carmen, Mexico)

Hotel Basico is a mix of fascinating Mexican influences located in the heart of Playa Del Carmen. Only a few steps away from the Caribbean sea and white sand, this amazing hotel presents an industrial contemporary vision in a youthful cosmopolitan ambiance. The rooftop pools are actually circular industrial tanks and the rooms and bathrooms are all decorated with eccentric local references such as spare tires and textures with recycled elements. The bathrooms also feature all exposed pipe work, resins and very industrial red/blue taps.

New Majestic Hotel (Singapore, Malaysia)

This new boutique hotel in Singapore’s historic Chinatown features 30 rooms individually designed by emerging Singaporean artists. The bathrooms all include freestanding baths but in different applications; the aquarium room includes an entirely glass-walled bathroom in the centre of the room, the attic suites have twin bathtubs in front of surrealist murals and others bathtubs on outdoor terraces.

Maison Moschino (Milan, Italy)

Previously a neo-classical railway station in central Milan, the Maison Moschino is housed in one of the city’s most beautiful buildings. All 65 rooms and suites have been designed with a contemporary fairy tale theme in mind. It’s an imaginative mix of rooms and is completely dreamlike, with suites such as ‘Alice’s Room’ featuring giant tea cup coffee tables and ‘The Forest’ which surrounds your bed in trees and very cute owls. The suite ‘Clouds’ has a clean, minimal design aesthetic including the bathroom which houses a corian basin, which imitates that cloud-like texture hidden behind glass sliding doors. And like the fashion label itself, Maison Moschino is quirky and super chic.

Kenoa Beach Spa & Resort (Barra De Sao Miguel, Brazil)

The nature friendly Kenoa resort on Brazil's stunning northern coast has been designed to provide a repose for those ready to wind down. Each of the 23 exclusive villas and suites include unique features such as views over the neighboring sanctuary, natural stone basins and beautiful wooden baths.

The White House (Daylesford, Australia)

So technically this isn’t a hotel, but it’s a house for hire so it counts. The 1850’s brick miners cottage located in Daylesford Victoria features open fireplaces, claw foot baths, vintage collections of antique furniture and hand painted wallpapers. Both bathrooms include quirky antiques such as the old scales and beautifully restored chandeliers.

Hotel Distrito Capital (Mexico City, Mexico)

Ok, I know this is my second Mexican hotel but they seriously have the coolest, most stylish bathrooms! (and I promise its not because I’ve had a slight obsession with Mexico since my honeymoon). Designed by Joseph Dirand, this sleek modern hotel boasts dazzling panoramic views of Mexico City that completely complement the design. Dark, ambient bathrooms with ultra modern fittings are just another example of how cool Mexico’s capital has become in recent years.

Qualia (Great Barrier Reef, Australia)

Qualia is a unique Australian expression of world class luxury, situated on the northern most tip of Hamilton Island. The bathrooms are a reflection of the beautiful natural surrounds and feature organic lines and floor to ceiling windows exposing you to the stone walls.

The Omvivo empire

It's not very often that you see something that completely dwarfs you (unless you're my height, of course) and amazes you with pure size and power. But this is what happened when Marc and myself were lucky enough to be sent down to Melbourne to visit the Schiavello group factory and Omvivo showroom.

You've probably already heard of the fantastic Schiavello furniture which feature sleek, designer lines that have been transferred to the bathware range by Omvivo.

Famous for their washplanes, over the years Omvivo have added a gorgeous range of glass, stone and solid-surface vessel basins and baths (not to mention the bright and fabulous range of stools we absolutely love here at Candana!) The product is always beautifully designed and every little detail is thought of for practicality.

This brave, designer-minded product is a perfect example of Australian design and quality and here at Candana we are extremely proud to be one of the lucky boutique stores to supply it.

Describe your design aesthetic in 5 words…
Bespoke, beautiful, practical, happy, colourful.

Which bathroom brand are you most likely to specify for your clients?
I would have to say ‘Villeroy & Boch’. The brand is extremely reliable. I use a Subway toilet on every job.

What inspires you to create beautiful spaces?
I love good design, whether it be interior, graphic, fashion or product design. When I see beautiful things, it provokes happiness. That’s what I remember when designing for other people, I want them to feel happy within their new beautiful space.

Who are some international designers/architects that you admire?
I love Kelly Wearstler for her daring and unique style (who everyone copies), Jonathan Adler for his playful and colourful approach to interior and product design, and Christian Liaigre for his sophistication and attention to detail.

If you could design anyone’s bathroom (past or present), whose would it be? And what would you do with it?
Oprah’s, I imagine I would have an amazing budget to play with, so I would use the opportunity to go completely over the top. The famous ‘O’ would be the base of inspiration. I would create a custom ‘O’ shaped bath in the center of the bathroom and than select bathroom fittings (from Candana, of course…) that complement this concept.

What is your favourite bathroom product? Why?
I love the Cult 120 Wall Basin by Studio Bagno; its beautiful to look at with it’s modern, slim profile and clean lines. Its also extremely practical as it has wide surrounds, allowing room for soap, candle, flowers etc.

It’s an essential part of everyday life and holds an immense amount of power over our emotions.

Bringing colour into a bathroom can completely transform the space from a commercial, almost clinical area to a reflection of ones personality and style.

Whether it’s floor to ceiling patterned wallpaper or a pop of brightly coloured tapware, the bathroom then becomes an extension of your home and personal style.

What you may not know is that Arne (along with the owner of Vola, Verner Overgaard) designed and manufactured the first ever mixer tap in the early 60’s!

This designer tap has been specified by the world’s best architects and designers and till this day is still one of the most contemporary and classic tapware ranges in the world.

Vola have now released an exciting addition to this industry favourite.

The Round Series is a range of inbuilt waste bins and tissue dispensers available in black or white. It’s flush application creates a minimal and super sleek option to ordinary bins and tissue boxes, perfect for commercial and residential applications.

And if you (like me) aren’t currently building but would love one of these stylish bathroom accessories, never fear! Vola have also come up with a retro-fit version where the bin is still wall mounted but sits slightly off the wall. Amazing.

Inspiration can come from the most unexpected places, even for bathrooms. Colours, patterns and general style can be adapted from anything, including fashion!

Mimo by Laufen is a wonderful range that encapsulates unconventionality and youthful exuberance. It offers a stylish solution for a compact area and includes fun accessories like the matching curtain and coloured ceramic-ware.

Mimo's use of black, white and graphic design is an excellent example of Ms Chanel's idea of the perfect harmony. After all, who doesn't want a bathroom that looks like it's straight out of Paris?!
